There was a novel by Bret Easton Ellis, called Lunar Park, which had a lot of influence on the lyrics of this album. This is a novel that was released in 2005, and it is about the life of the author. The beauty of this album is that it is told not from the perspective of the main character of the novel, but from the perspective of his son Roddy. The lyrics of the album are mostly about two disorder that a lot of teens today suffer from, namely bipolar disorder and ADHD. It also talks about many other current concepts that affect young people today, like the use od mind-influencing and technology to escape reality. This is really beautiful because although not everyone can relate to the use of drugs, we can all relate to the use of technology to escape reality. Whenever we are upset about something, or whenever we are in an awkward situation, we take out our mobile phones and start checking out Facebook to escape the awkward reality.
The main character is supposed to be this 10 to 15 year old kid who sits in his room, downloads music and plays games to escape the reality. But the character's confusions and "techniques" to go to another world are not limited to his age group. A lot of people who are much older engage in the same patterns of behavior. That's why the novel and album were both so successful.
